SPRING/SUMMER 2011 {a little recap!}

I caschetti si gonfiano, le matite si temperano, gli obbiettivi vengono lucidati, le unghie, invece di essere affilate (pratica molto utile per le streghe, ma decisamente fuori luogo in certi contesti), si coprono di un leggero strato di Particulière. Gli animi, fino ad oggi abbastanza controllati, visto anche il clima di understatement milanese, sono pronti (speriamo) ad esplodere, a scintillare, per l'accecante luce riflessa della città ultima tappa delle collezioni primavera/estate 2011: Parigi. Forse, da domani, niente sarà più come prima o, più probabilmente, tutto sarà splendido come è sempre stato. Nell'attesa vi proponiamo un piccolo riassunto di quanto accaduto finora, anzi, di ciò che più ci ha interessato.

The bobs have been done, the pencils are thin, the lens have been polished and the nails, instead of being sharpened (which is a very useful practice for witches, but definitely inappropriate in certain environments), are going to be covered in a "Particulière" coating. The nerves, quite calm so far, having seen Milan's low profile attitude, are (hopefully) ready to burst out, to shine in reflection of Paris' blinding lights, the city which is going to be the last stage for spring/summer 2011 catwalks. Maybe nothing is going to be the same again or, probably, everything will be as wonderful as ever. In the meantime here is a little recap of what's happened so far, obviously focused on what we've appreciated the most. (Sorry if you don't agree.)

Minimalisti contro "maximalisti", questo forse il filo che ha legato un po' tutte le collezioni, non solo quelle newyorkesi. L'abbinamento bianco/nero, vera ancora di salvezza estetica, si è scontrato con la sgargiante Cina di Philosophy e con il neon di Alexandre Herchcovitch. Influenze orientali anche per Oscar De La Renta e Marc Jacobs; bellissime le stampe di Diane Von Furstenberg e un tocco etno-folk per Anna Sui, che, non prendendo parte alla battaglia principale, si è, insieme ad altri, ritirata nella calda e accogliente isola dei Seventies.

Minimalists vs. "Maximalists": this could be the theme that linked most of the collections, non only in the New York days. Black and white, the safety net of color's combinations, clashed with the blooming and playful Philosophy's China and with Herchcovitch's fluo shades. Oscar De La Renta and Marc Jacobs followed the asiatic path as well, while Mrs. Diane Von Furstenberg showed us gorgeous prints and Anna Sui, who didn't enter the main battlefield, found her place, along many others, in the warm and welcoming "Seventies Island".

Londra si è dimostrata, come sempre, più incline alla sperimentazione, alla ricerca di nuove strade. Erdem Moralioglu, designer canadese premiato dal British Fashion Council, ha riconfermato il suo talento per i tessuti stampati: la sua visione di ballerine russe è un trionfo di motivi floreali, realizzati con tecniche particolari, ed accostati in modo inusuale. Cristopher Bailey, direttore creativo di Burberry, ha giocato, nella linea Prorsum, con il trench dei nostri sogni, rendendolo chiodo sofisticato, o ravvivandolo con accessori neon e le tanto amate borchie. Giles Deacon si è unito alla gang del colore, mentre l'ironico Ashish Gupta ha impiegato le sue grandi doti tecniche per creare una texana ricoperta di pailettes.

London has confirmed itself as the right city for experimenting and crossing the boundaries. Erdem Moralioglu, the Canadian designer, winner of the British Fashion Council award, showed, once again, his special talent for printed fabrics: his vision of a Russian ballet was a blaze of floral patterns, created with advanced techniques, and put together in unusual ways. Cristopher Bailey, Chief Creative Officer at Burberry, used the Prorsum line as a playground for transforming our dream's trench coat in a sophisticated leather biker jacket or combining it with neon accessories and always loved studs. Giles Deacon joined the color's posse, while Ashish Gupta spent his great technical skills to give birth to an all-sequins, humorous version of a Texas cowgirl.

La scorsa settimana la lotta tra minimalismo ed esplosioni di colore si è fatta molto serrata. Francesco Scognamiglio ha fatto sfilare linee sobrie ed impeccabili, come nel caso del tailleur bianco, impossibile non immaginare indossato da Bianca Jagger. Aquilano e Rimondi hanno presentato camicie e lunghe gonne, con fantasie contrastanti, puntando, forse con maggior successo rispetto alla collezione Ferrè, su uno stile gipsy e gambe in vista; e ancora righe, pois, e colori brillanti, nelle gonne a portafoglio disegnate da Karl Lagerfeld per Fendi. Un punto decisivo per la squadra del colore lo mette a segno Jil Sander, regina del minimalismo fin dagli anni '90, alle cui usuali linee "tagliate con il coltello", Raf Simons preferisce gonne palloncino lunghe, a righe colorate, ampie giacche su morbidi pantaloni in tonalità (indovinate un po'?) fluo! e abiti vaporosi, stampati a grossi fiori dai colori decisi. Arancio, viola e verde smeraldo conquistano anche Gucci e Versace, mentre Calamity Jane arriva fino a Milano, indossando gli eleganti e ironici completi ideati da Moschino. 

Last week in Milan the fight between minimalism and color's explosions became even tougher. Francesco Scognamiglio let the models go down the catwalk in elegant and sober lines, like the ones in the white suit, which is impossible not to imagine wore by Bianca Jagger.  Aquilano.Rimondi made shirts and long skirts, in clashing patterns, going for a gipsy style, probably getting higher results compared to their Ferrè collection. Again we see stripes, polka dots and bold colors in the wrap skirts Karl Lagerfeld designed for Fendi. An important goal for "color team" has scored by Jil Sander, queen of minimalism since early Nineties, for whom the designer Raf Simons preferred long bubble striped skirt, loose jackets on smooth trousers in (guess what?) fluo colors! and puffy flower print dresses over her usual "cut with the knife" tailoring. Orange, purple and emerald green won the love of Gucci and Versace as well, meanwhile Calamity Jane arrived to Milan wearing the ironic and stylish suits created by Moschino.
