NEW PORTRAIT OF OLD GARBATELLA

Siamo in un quartiere della Roma storica, nato per ospitare operai e case popolari, una zona "in via di estinzione", di cui, troppo spesso, la televisione e il cinema ci rimandano un'immagine distorta, caricaturale. Garbatella è una piccola oasi dentro questa città caotica, un luogo costruito ispirandosi alle Garden Cities inglesi, pieno di luce, di verde, di scorci meravigliosi. Passeggiare per queste vie, osservare le basse case con l'intonaco scrostato, ammirare le vecchie insegne dei negozi, ti fa sentire in una Roma diversa, la Roma di altre generazioni, di altre vite. Ma nuove realtà sono nate dietro questi archi, vicino ai solidi portoni con le maniglie d'ottone; la nostra meta è, infatti, la galleria fotografica 10B uno spazio multifunzionale, interamente dedicato alla fotografia.

We're in one of the historic Rome's district, built for accomodate industrial workers and popular houses, an area to protect, very far from its distorted, caricatural portrait that we often see on television and movies. Garbatella is a tiny oasis inside a chaotic city: its architecture has been inspired by England's Garden Cities, and this is why it's a place full of light and green trees, with so many wonderful views. Walking around these streets, watching the small buildings, with ripped walls, staring at the old shops signs, all these things make you feel in a completely different Rome, in the city of other generations, a Rome owned by different lives. But behind the beautiful arches, next to the solid doors with brass handlers, new realities were born. We're, in fact, heading to gallery 10B, a multifunctional space, all dedicated to photography.

L'idea che i due fondatori, Francesco Zizola e Claudio Palmisano, hanno realizzato nel 2007 è quella di fondere, in una struttura unica, una galleria, un laboratorio fotografico di editing e stampa digitale, e un luogo dedicato alla formazione, proponendo corsi sia per fotografi esperti che per fotoamatori. Ciò che andrebbe apprezzato è l'impegno per riportare l'attenzione sulla fotografia come arte e, in particolare, sul fotogiornalismo, e il desiderio di offrire maggiore visibilità alle opere dei giovani talenti del settore. 

The two founders, Francesco Zizola and Claudio Palmisano, idea, that became reality in 2007, was to merge, in a single place, an art gallery, a photography lab, for digital printing and editing, and a training space, both for professional and amateur photographers. What should be appreciated is their effort to bring attention to photography as an art form and, particularly, to the role of photo reportes, and the strong desire to give more visibility to young talents in this field.

La mostra in corso in questi giorni, e motivo della nostra visita, rende omaggio a Félix Nadar, pioniere della ritrattistica moderna, in occasione del centenario della sua scomparsa. Insieme alle opere di Nadar, vera rivoluzione in un periodo in cui la fotografia era mera riproduzione della realtà, priva di ogni valenza artistica e di attenzione psicologica al soggetto, sono stati esposti i lavori di artisti contemporanei, tutti accomunati da un nuovo approccio al ritratto. Il soggetto è interpretato nei modi più diversi, sfruttando le tecniche classiche, per esprimere più ampi contenuti, o ricorrendo alle più moderne tecnologie, come l'immagine scattata attraverso un microscopio. La fotografia è un universo a cui è difficile rimanere insensibili, una comunicazione così forte e immediata, così presente nella nostra vita quotidiana e così lontana dalle parole, che non ritengo sia utile provare a spiegare. Preferisco concludere con le parole dello stesso Nadar, che, quasi certamente, sapeva di cosa stava parlando:

"Non esiste la fotografia artistica. Nella fotografia esistono, come in tutte le cose, delle persone che sanno vedere e altre che non sanno nemmeno guardare."

The current exhibition, which was the reason for our visit, it's a tribute to Félix Nadar, pioneer in modern portraiture, in occasion of his death's centenary. Nadar's work was a true revolution in a moment in which photography was just a reproduction of reality, with no artistic value and very far from being interested in the psychological aspect of people. Displayed along his work in the gallery there are several photographs, taken by contemporary artists, and what they all have in common is a new approach to portrait: the subject is represented in the most different ways, using classic techniques to express much wider meanings, or capturing it with the latest technology, as microscope shots. Photography is a universe very difficult to ignore, a way of communication so strong and immediate, so present in our everyday life and so far from words, that I don't think it could be useful trying to describe. I prefer to leave you with Nadar's own words, who, almost certainly, knew what it was talking about:

"There is no such thing as artistic photography. In photography, as in every other thing, there are people who can see and others who don't even know how to look."
