Venus in Furs è il titolo dell'editoriale, scattato qualche mese fa da Meisel per Vogue Italia. La gioia di questa coincidenza che, solo per un attimo, ci ha legato ad una delle riviste di moda più importanti al mondo, e l'autoindulgenza che ne è derivata, mi ha fatto concentrare sullo sfogliare avidamente le pagine, più che sul leggere con attenzione i crediti. Se l'avessi fatto, oggi non mi sarei tanto stupita nello scoprire che una di queste due algide modelle, quella in basso, con la sua espressione languida e la bocca carnosa è un ragazzo di 19 anni, nuova musa del fashion system, di nome Andrej Pejic.


Venus in Furs is the title of this editorial, shot by Steven Meisel and published few months ago on Vogue Italia. The excitement for the coincidence, that for just a minute, linked us to one of the most important fashion magazines of the entire world, and the self-indulgence that resulted, made me browse the pages eagerly, rather than focus my attention on credits. If I've done that, today I would not be so surprised to find out that one of these blonde models, the one below, with her languid expression and full lips his a 19 years old guy, new muse of the fashion system, who's name is Andrej Pejic.

Di origini serbe, scoperto in Australia, questo ragazzo ha scatenato l'attenzione di fotografi e riviste, di stylist e designer, ed è stato scelto, per le campagne pubblicitarie della prossima primavera, da Jean Paul Gaultier e Marc Jacobs. L'apparenza incerta, la difficoltà nell'individuare il sesso di una persona, hanno sempre suscitato interesse nel mondo della moda: la bellezza di una donna androgina è, ormai da molto tempo, preferita alle curve di Botero, e i lineamenti duri dell'uomo, la mascella squadrata, tanto apprezzata negli anni '80, hanno ceduto il posto a volti delicati, fisionomie "di frontiera", geneticamente sempre in bilico tra i due generi.

Of serbian origins, discovered in Australia, this young man obtained the attention of photographers and magazines, of stylists and designers, and has been chosen by Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs for their spring 2011 campaigns. The uncertain appearance, the difficulty in identifying a person sex, have always aroused interest in the fashion world: the beauty of an androgynous woman, from a long time, it's preferred to Botero's curves, and the hard featured man, the square jaw, so popular in the eighties, gave space to delicate "frontier" faces, always genetically poised between two genders.

Nel 1982 Julie Andrews interpretava Victor Victoria, brillante commedia in cui una cantante, cui il successo non arride, si finge uomo, e travestito, per scatenare l'interesse del pubblico. L'estetica sembra, quindi, amare il gioco di ruolo tra maschile e femminile: da Marlene Dietrich in smoking, ai numerosi ruoli borderline di Tilda Swinton, il confondersi dei sessi suscita sgomento, ma anche curiosità e domande morbose.

In 1982 Julie Andrews played Victor Victoria, brilliant comedy in which a female singer, with no success, pretend to be a man, and a transvestite, to have the public's interest. Aesthetic seems to love the role play between masculine and feminine: from Marlene Dietrich's smoking to borderline roles interpreted by Tilda Swinton, the confusion of sexes set off dismay, but also curiosity and different questions.

Alcuni studi dicono che, nel percorso evolutivo che ci attende, la differenza tra maschio e femmina sarà sempre più ridotta, sarà sempre più difficile individuare le differenze attraverso l'aspetto fisico; il nostro futuro sembra condurci verso un modello umano univoco, in cui x e y si equivalgono, privo di caratteri dominanti. Non so dire se sia un bene o meno. Da una parte, ho sempre trovato esteticamente più attraenti le donne androgine, senza curve, con poco seno e fianchi inesistenti; e non ho mai amato particolarmente il macho muscoloso e lucido, preferendogli sempre l'uomo magro, con pochi muscoli, non troppo cavernicolo. Credo, però, di essere scarsamente evoluta, perchè un uomo come Andrej Pejic, per quanto oggettivamente bellissimo, mi mette una certa ansia.

Some studies say that, in future evolution, there will be less and less difference between male and female, it will be increasingly hard to identify peculiar characters through physical appearance. It seems that our future is leading us to a single human model, in which x and y are the same, in which there's no room for dominant characters. I can't say if it's good or bad. On one hand I've always found androgynous women, with no curves, nearly non existent breasts and hips, more attractive; and I've never loved so much the macho type, all muscles, always preferring a thin man, not too caveman. Unfortunately I think I'm poorly developed, because a man like Andrej Pejic, even if undoubtedly beautiful, makes me a little anxious.

Lo immagino dentro una nave spaziale, tutta bianca, vestito di pellicola trasparente Cookie, con il corpo perfetto steso su un lettino, in una camera criogenica, mentre si depila l'inguine con un laser blu. Probabilmente è l'insicurezza dell'ignoto a farmi parlare così, ma trovo che la varietà sia una caratteristica essenziale del nostro mondo e, se vogliamo parlare di moda, penso che una ragazza, che sembri anche una ragazza, vestita in modo maschile, sia molto più bella e attraente e sensuale di un futuristico uomo/donna, buono un po' per tutte le stagioni. 

I can picture him inside a white spaceship, dressed in plastic wrap, lying, with his perfect body, on a bed in a cryogenic room, shaving intimate parts with a blu laser. Probably is the uncertainty of the unknown that makes me speak like that, but I'm sure that variety is an essential feature of our world and that a girl, who also looks like one, dressed in a masculine way, is more beautiful and sexy than a futuristic man/woman, good for all seasons.

Negli ultimi anni, sempre più spesso, ho sentito pronunciare la parola matrimonio. Mi domando se, come in ogni periodo di crisi, sia il desiderio di solidità, la necessità di costruire qualcosa che non sia precario, che si spera possa durare in eterno, a muovere tutte queste coppie che, una dopo l'altra, decidono di sfilare lungo la navata della chiesa prescelta, suscitando tanta gioia e commozione. Ad ogni ragazza è capitato di immaginare quel giorno, di fantasticare sui dettagli, anche i più futili, della propria cerimonia ideale: non credo sia un sintomo di superficialità, o di egocentrismo, quanto, piuttosto, la riscoperta della favola, della delicatezza, del sogno, che la vita quotidiana, con la sua pragmaticità, relega nell'oblio, stigmatizza come desideri sciocchi, come perdite di tempo. Sicuramente creare un proprio "album pre-nozze" completo di ritagli di tessuto e fiori secchi, quando ancora non si ha ricevuto una proposta, o quando si è single, potrebbe risultare esagerato; ma le future spose dovrebbero fantasticare il più possibile, sfogliare le riviste patinate, piene di foto meravigliose, avvolgere il grigio quotidiano in una nuvola di tulle e in metri di nastri lavanda.

In the past few years I've heard, more and more often, the word wedding. I'm wondering if it's because, like in every moment of crisis, we need stability, we desire to build something not precarious, that we hope will last forever, and these feelings are what drives all these couples to walk through the aisle of the church, causing all this joy and emotion. Every girl, one time or another, has imagined that day, fantasizing about the details of her ideal ceremony: I don't think this could be a sign of selfishness, but rather the discovery of the fairytale, of sensibility, of dreams, all aspects that everyday life, so pragmatic, keeps distant from us, labeling them as silly desires, waisted time. Obviously creating a personal "pre-wedding album", with scraps of fabric and dried flowers, when you're not engaged, or even single, could be seen as going a little bit too far! But every bride-to-be should fantasize as much as possible, browsing the glossy magazines, full of wonderful inspiring pictures, and wrap the grey everyday life in a cloud made of voile and in yards of lavender ribbons.

Ogni sposa ha il suo stile, ogni ragazza il suo modo di affrontare gli aspetti organizzativi e quelli più romantici della futura cerimonia; quello che è certo è che oggi, più di anni fa, si richiede alle coppie uno sforzo non indifferente, fatto di una serie infinita di decisioni, non tutte particolarmente entusiasmanti. Una delle mie più care amiche si sposerà tra qualche mese e mi diverto molto a chiederle informazioni, a vedere come procede nelle sue scelte, a scoprire se nel menu definitivo ci sarà spazio per il tanto avversato consommè. Le cose da fare sono tantissime; dalle più ovvie, come la lista degli invitati e la scelta delle bomboniere, a quelle più complicate, che fanno storcere il naso agli uomini, che li costringono ad imparare termini che non avrebbero mai immaginato di poter pronunciare in pubblico: palette, mise en place, pisello odoroso (vi giuro che non è quello che state pensando!).

Every future bride has her own personal style, every girl has her way to deal with both the organizational and the romantics aspects of the ceremony. What is certain is that today, more than years ago, a huge effort it's required to the couples: they have to make a never ending list of decisions, most of them not so exciting. One of my dearest friends is going to get married in a couple of months and I'm having a lot of fun asking her all the details, watching her choices, trying to find out if in the final menu there will be room for the much opposed consommè. There are so many things to do, from the most obvious, like the guest list and the selection of wedding favors, to the complicated ones, which make men wrinkle their nose, and learn words they've never imagined of saying in public: palette, mise en place, "pisello odoroso" (it's a flower , really don't know the translation of this one!).

La cosa più bella dell'organizzazione di un matrimonio credo sia la possibilità offerta ai futuri sposi di regalarsi un giorno su misura, 24 ore dedicate solo alla celebrazione del loro sentimento, una lunga festa in cui tutto, dal colore dei fiori, alle candele, alla torta a strati piena di glassa reale, racchiude una dichiarazione d'amore, una promessa per il futuro, una speranza condivisa con le persone più care.

The most beautiful thing in organizing a wedding it's the possibility, given to the couple, to make theirselves a present of a "tailored day", 24 hours dedicated just to celebrate their feelings, a long party in which everything, from the color of flowers, to candles, to the layer cake filled with royal icing, contains a love declaration, a promise for the future, a hope shared with your loved ones. 

E noi, le "persone care", non possiamo che essere entusiasti di far parte di ricordi così belli, di offrire sostegno ai fidanzati e di promettere loro di non abbandonarli, neanche quando saranno sommersi da bambini urlanti, il cui passatempo preferito sarà quello di appiccicare caccole sui vestiti carini delle amiche della mamma. E nel frattempo, in attesa che si realizzi il loro sogno (quello del matrimonio, non i ragazzini caccolosi!) agitarci se, come la sottoscritta, siamo ancora privi di qualunque idea sul vestito che indosseremo.

And we, "the loved ones", we can't do nothing but being excited to be part of such wonderful memories, to offer our support to the future bride and groom and to promise them not to leave them behind, when their house will be full of screaming kids, who spend time sticking boogers to mommy's friends cute dresses. And in the meantime, while they're waiting to realize their dream (the wedding, not the boogers kids one!) we can stress ourselves out if we have absolutely no idea of what we're going to wear that day! (exactly like me).

Dio benedica l'America! Questa domenica ha, finalmente, preso il via la stagione di premiazioni 2011: un mese e mezzo di cinema e serie televisive, di attori e cantanti, di star e starlette, che, dai Golden Globes appena assegnati, ci condurrà all'attesissima e opulenta cerimonia degli Oscar. I cinefili staranno scorrendo con la mente le performance dei loro interpreti preferiti, passando in rassegna le pellicole che hanno amato e recuperando quelle che non sono riusciti a vedere, ma una riflessione è d'obbligo: quando si parla di award season a chi è che frega qualcosa dei film? Siamo seri: gli unici veri protagonisti di questo circo stravagante, che solo Hollywood poteva sceneggiare, sono i VESTITI!! 

E', perciò, obbligatorio, almeno per quanto ci riguarda, passare in rassegna le scelte di moda, più o meno azzardate, che le grandi star fanno in queste occasioni e che, molto spesso, sono il barometro delle tendenze dei mesi successivi. 

God bless America! This Sunday the 2011 Award Season has finally kicked off: more than a month full of cinema and television series, actors and singers, stars and starlets that, from the Golden Globes, will lead us to the anticipated and opulent Oscar ceremony. Cinema junkies are going to rethink of all their favorite performances, remembering all the films they've loved in the past year and trying to see the ones they haven't seen yet; but a reflection here it's mandatory: when it comes to award season who cares about the movies? Please, let's be serious: the only main characters in this bizarre circus, that only Hollywood could dramatize, are the CLOTHES!

This is why it's so important, at least for us, to look at all the fashion choices, the wisest and the silliest, that big movie stars are going to make in this month, which are very often the barometer of future trends.

Continua la storia d'amore tra le donne e le PAILLETTES. Ormai si prediligono, per fortuna, piccole pietre, che emanano un bagliore delicato, abbinate a tessuti morbidi e tonalità neutre; un abito luccicante è sempre molto femminile ed è un'ottima alternativa a metodi più "invasivi" per attirare gli sguardi sul corpo della donna. Le paillettes sembrano anche abbastanza democratiche: non sono, per forza, riservate alle pre-adolescenti, possono essere indossate, con una certa dignità, anche dalle donne più mature, come ci dimostrano Sandra Bullock e la sua frangia da Bobtail (3) in Jenny Packham. Anche Scarlett Johansson (2) ha scelto di brillare in Elie Saab, forse sperando nell'effetto terapeutico dell'abito da principessa, sebbene il suo viso smagrito dica chiaramente «quello stronzo mi ha mollato per farsela con quella vecchia con la frangia da Bobtail!». Più serena e in salute, almeno nella vita reale, sembra, invece, Olivia Wilde (1) in Marchesa.

It seems that the love story between women and SEQUINS is going to last. Thankfully the most liked are the small ones, which give a delicate glow, combined with soft fabrics and neutral tones; a sparkling dress is always feminine and offers a great alternative to "invasive" ways of drawing attention to woman's body. Sequins seem also to be very democratic: they are not necessarily reserved to pre-adolescents, they can be worn, with a certain amount of dignity, also by older women, as shown by Sandra Bullock (3), and her Bobtail bang, in Jenny Packham. Scarlett Johansson (2) has chosen to shine too, in her Elie Saab dress, maybe hoping in the therapeutic effect of the princess gown, even if her  thin face seems to say «that bastard left me to hang out with that oldie with the Bobtail bang!». Happier, and healthier, at least in real life, Olivia Wilde (1) chose a gorgeous Marchesa.

It's been a while....

Prima c'è stata Milano: una città ingiustamente etichettata come grigia, triste, angosciante. Da VeraRomana non so cosa mi faccia irritare di più: averla tanto apprezzata o doverlo ammettere pubblicamente! E' una città vitale, molto "europea", piena di attrattive e possibilità per accontentare chiunque; e perciò mi sento di invitare i carissimi 19 lettori [se riuscissimo ad arrivare a 25 sarebbe così Manzoniano...] a provare per credere: ecco una piccola lista dei luoghi che ci hanno particolarmente interessato.

At first there was Milan: a city unfairly labeled as grey, sad and distressing. Being a TrueRoman citizen I actually can't say what makes me more angry: the fact that I've appreciated this city so much, or that I have to admit it publicly! It's a lively place, very "european",  full of possibilities and attractions to please anyone; and this is why I want to invite our dear 19 readers [if we could reach 25 it would be so "Manzoni"...] to see by themselves: here is a short list of our must-see places.

Prima dei cd, molto prima delle playlist di iTunes, c'erano le audiocassette. Fieri dei nostri 90 minuti di nastro, creavamo compilation da scambiare tra i banchi di scuola, regalare ad una persona speciale, copiare dall'amico tornato da Londra con le ultime novità. Abbiamo voluto recuperare questa faccia dimenticata della musica attraverso la MusicBoard: poche canzoni, quelle che avrebbero riempito una cassetta, legate alla nostra ispirazione del mese.

Before cd, long before iTunes playlists, there was the audio-cassette. We were so proud of our compilations: 90 minutes tape that we shared at school, gave as a present for the special one, copied from a friend just come back from London with the latest news. We wanted to remember this music forgotten face through the MusicBoard: few tracks, the right number for a tape, linked to our monthly inspiration.

The Real Venuses: ICONS

Naso aquilino, capelli corvini, quasi blu, lucidi di brillantina e tirati indietro, il viso coperto da strati di cipria bianca, contrastata da squillanti tocchi di rosso cremisi, come una maschera del teatro kabuki; le unghie lunghe e laccate, l'aspetto eccentrico, curato in ogni dettaglio, l'amore per il lusso e l'esagerazione: Diana Vreeland non era mai stata la donna più bella, ma di sicuro era sempre la più attraente, quella che emanava un fascino cui, tuttora, è impossibile resistere. Arrivata, quasi per caso, nella redazione di Harper's Bazaar nel 1936, questa giovane mondana, dotata di un gusto eccezionale, ottenne un successo immediato con la rubrica intitolata "Why don't you?", in cui  dispensava consigli assurdi, suggerendo alle lettrici di abbandonare una noiosa versione di loro stesse, ingegnandosi per diventare qualcosa di diverso.  Per 26 anni lavorò nella rivista, passando da semplice redattrice a fashion editor, reinventando totalmente questo ruolo, cercando di «dare alla gente quello che non aveva mai sognato di poter desiderare».

Arched nose, dark black hair, almost blue, shiny with grease and pulled back, face covered in white powder layers, contrasting with crimson red touches, like a Kabuki mask. Long lacquered nails, eccentric look, with attention of every single detail, in love with luxury and exaggeration: Diana Vreeland never was the most beautiful woman, but she always was the more attractive one, oozing a charm, which is still impossible to resist. She started working, almost by chance, at Harper's Bazaar Magazine in 1936, and this young socialite, with her extraordinary taste, had a huge and immediate success with the column "Why Don't you?" in which she gave whimsical advices to the readers, telling them to forget their ordinary dull self and be ingenious, making themselves into something else. She worked there for 26 years, starting as a simple editor and becoming fashion editor, completely reinventing that job in her attempt to «give people what they never ever thought they could want».

emBRACE the power...(dressing)

L'abbigliamento maschile: un orfano, troppo spesso dimenticato, sottovalutato, maltrattato. Un affamato Oliver Twist a cui, proprio noi italiani, neghiamo quel piatto di minestra, quell'attenzione in più, che gli darebbe nuove forze. Siamo abituate a pensare che due completi, qualche camicia bianca e una decina di cravatte sia tutto quello di cui un uomo ha bisogno, il minimo indispensabile per evitare il rischio di intere giornate passate in tuta e canotta davanti alla televisione. La verità è che per tanti anni le donne sono state cieche; la verità è che non c'è stata alcuna rivoluzione sociale: l'uomo è sempre stato attento al proprio aspetto, ha sempre voluto dare un'immagine di se stesso attraverso gli abiti, gli accessori, i dettagli e, anche il più pigro, il più distratto e disinteressato, ha comunque sbirciato tra le pagine di qualche rivista trovata in bagno, tra le campagne pubblicitarie, nei video musicali o nei film, rielaborando, prendendo spunto per le proprie scelte stilistiche (anche per le più discutibili). 

Men's clothing: an orphan, too often forgotten, underestimated, mistreated. It's like denying the pot of soup Oliver Twist is begging for, refusing to care a little more, to give him new strength. We use to think that two suits, some white shirts and a dozen of simple ties it's everything a man will ever need, minimum required to avoid the risk of sweatpants, tank tops and television devoted days. Truth is women have been blind for long time; there wasn't any kind of social revolution: man has always cared for his appearance, always wanted to give a certain image of himself through clothes, accessories, details and always, even the laziest man, the less interested in fashion, has glanced at the pages of a magazine found in the bathroom, at the advertising campaigns, at music videos or movies to find inspiration for his stylistic choices (even the questionable ones).

I caschetti si gonfiano, le matite si temperano, gli obbiettivi vengono lucidati, le unghie, invece di essere affilate (pratica molto utile per le streghe, ma decisamente fuori luogo in certi contesti), si coprono di un leggero strato di Particulière. Gli animi, fino ad oggi abbastanza controllati, visto anche il clima di understatement milanese, sono pronti (speriamo) ad esplodere, a scintillare, per l'accecante luce riflessa della città ultima tappa delle collezioni primavera/estate 2011: Parigi. Forse, da domani, niente sarà più come prima o, più probabilmente, tutto sarà splendido come è sempre stato. Nell'attesa vi proponiamo un piccolo riassunto di quanto accaduto finora, anzi, di ciò che più ci ha interessato.

The bobs have been done, the pencils are thin, the lens have been polished and the nails, instead of being sharpened (which is a very useful practice for witches, but definitely inappropriate in certain environments), are going to be covered in a "Particulière" coating. The nerves, quite calm so far, having seen Milan's low profile attitude, are (hopefully) ready to burst out, to shine in reflection of Paris' blinding lights, the city which is going to be the last stage for spring/summer 2011 catwalks. Maybe nothing is going to be the same again or, probably, everything will be as wonderful as ever. In the meantime here is a little recap of what's happened so far, obviously focused on what we've appreciated the most. (Sorry if you don't agree.)

IT'S JUST A LITTLE CRUSH ♥ manie del momento

Ognuno di noi ha le sue piccole manie. A tutti sarà capitato di canticchiare per giorni la stessa canzone, di guardare più volte lo stesso film, pur conoscendolo a memoria, di comprare lo stesso capo in più varianti di colore (in questo ultimo caso sarebbe meglio parlare di saggia decisione; ma non divaghiamo). Come tutti, anche noi, siamo spesso preda di innamoramenti e fissazioni, a volte improvvisi, altre ciclici, altre volte vere e proprie passioni, che superano il momento, la moda, i sopravvalutati trend. Una di queste debolezze è tornata con prepotenza nei nostri discorsi quotidiani dopo aver visto, all'esposizione fotografica di cui vi avevamo parlato, questi stupendi lavori di Julia Fullerton-Batten. I suoi ritratti ci hanno letteralmente stregato, costringendoci a guardarli ancora, più da vicino, per coglierne ogni dettaglio, ogni sfumatura di luce. Uno dei progetti più significativi e interessanti di questa fotografa di fama internazionale, le cui opere sono esposte anche alla National Portrait Gallery di Londra, documenta il percorso di ragazze adolescenti per diventare giovani donne, affrontando temi come la ricerca dell'identità personale, il desiderio di realizzazione, la paura di crescere troppo in fretta. Caratteristica della Batten è proprio la sensibilità estrema con cui osserva queste ragazzine normali, ritraendole in momenti di sognante isolamento, di oblio, momenti in cui la mente vaga, persa in una foresta di sogni. Ma alla delicatezza emotiva di questi scatti si accompagna un'estetica purissima, un perfetto bilanciamento dei colori, che rende impossibile ignorare i dettagli. E ciò che immediatamente ha catturato i nostri sguardi sono stati proprio i colori e, particolarmente, il meraviglioso rosso dei capelli, in contrasto con il bianco della pella diafana.

Everyone has his own quirks. Each one of us, at least one time, has being humming the same song for days, has watched the same movie again and again, even knowing every dialog of it, or has bought the same garment in different colors (in this particular case we should talk about wise decision; but that's not the point). Like everyone else we have our crushes as well, our little obsessions: sometimes they occur suddenly, and burn out as quickly, sometimes they come back, in a cyclic way, and other times they are real passions, going beyond the moment, beyond fashion and overstated trends. One of these weaknesses burst out with violence in our everyday chatting after we saw these amazing works at the photographic gallery we've talked you about. Julia Fullerton-Batten's portraits bewitched us, forcing us to look at them again and again, to stay there, staring at the pictures, closer and closer, trying to capture every detail, every light's movement. An interesting and beautiful project of the world renowned photographer, whose work is also displayed at London National Portrait Gallery, follows teenage girls in their path to become young women, dealing with meaningful topics like the search for their own identity, the desire of reaching success in life and the fear of growing too fast. One of this photographer's great feature is the sensibility through which she observes these average young ladies, freezing moments of dreamy loneliness, with their minds running around a forest made of dreams. But the emotional softness comes with neat aesthetic, with perfect color balance, that makes every detail, even the tiniest, impossible to ignore. And what we immediately fell for was exactly the colors: the bright, rich hair redness, in contrast with the white translucent skin.
